Sophie Norton
Hamlyn Feilden Fellow in the Centre for Conservation Studies

Profile

Biography

Sophie has an MA in Historic Environment Conservation from the University of Birmingham (Ironbridge Institute).

Career

Sophie has worked as a Local Authority Conservation Officer and a Project Manager on a Heritage Lottery Funded project in Chester. Both roles required working with building owners, contractors and professionals to find practical and affordable solutions for adapting and modernising a range of listed and unlisted historic buildings. Prior to beginning this post in June 2009, Sophie sat on the North West Heritage Skills Hub steering group.

Departmental roles

Sophie Norton is, with Navin Piplani, a Hamlyn Feilden Fellow in the Centre for Conservation Studies. The post has been jointly funded by English Heritage and the Helen Hamlyn Trust in order to address the craft skills shortages in the Yorkshire and Humber region, as shown by the National Heritage Training Group research published in 2008.

Research

Overview

Sophie is particularly interested in the affect that incremental and uncontrolled changes in the built environment, as well as widespread neglect, have on the overall character of places and how Government policy in planning and heritage, education and the distribution of funding influences this.
