Aims and Objectives
Aims:
- To provide students with a knowledge of key areas of archaeological evidence from the Early Prehistoric period and with an understanding of its modes of interpretation, with a particular focus on social/cognitive approaches..
- To provide the opportunity to gain a general acquaintance with leading themes, types of evidence and methods of interpretation, and detailed understanding of selected areas/periods, which might become the springboard for further research.
- To provide a learning and research opportunity for students whose previous experience is either of archaeology, psychology or anthropology but not primarily that of the Eary Prehistoric period.
Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of the course, students should have:
- Developed an awareness of the scope of Early Prehistory and knowledge of key early prehistoric societies
- Be able to identify key transitions in human evolution
- Be aware of the issues of interpreting archaeological evidence for early prehistoric societies
- Have developed a critical understanding of the key debates in the period
- Through writing essays and producing projects, developed your ability to gather and organise information and arguments in a critical and independent manner
- Undertaken a piece of independant research on a topic within early prehistory
- Developed your presentational skills through the delivery of seminar papers on a range of diverse themes
