Module choices

Signature modules are compulsory. Students must choose from the selection of supplementary modules and skills modules listed here, and these must be approved by the Programme Director.

= Recommended as particularly appropriate modules for students registered for the MSc in Biological Archaeology.

Autumn Term

• Bioarchaeology, ecofacts and figures (20 credit signature module)

Supplementary module (20 credits) Choose any one from the following list of modules:

• Bones: matters of life and death
• The context and practice of gathering field archaeology data
  possible alternatives include
  • Coastal landscapes
  • Digital publication and web technologies
  • Concepts of landscapes
  • The Vikings
  • Mesolithic theory and interpretation

Research skills and training modules (5 credits) weeks 2-5: Choose one from the following list of modules:

• Zooarchaeology: anatomy and identification
• Topographical Survey
  possible alternatives include
  • Narrating our Pasts
  • Working on the web
  • Lime and Stone

Research skills and training modules (5 credits) weeks 6-9 Choose one from the following list of modules:

• Artefacts
• Introduction to biomolecules, invertebrates and plants
• Geophysical Survey
  possible alternatives include
  • Database Design and Implementation
  • Buildings Survey
  • Legislation and Policy

Spring Term

• Bioarchaeology data analysis: not just digging up plants and animals (Signature module, 20 credits)

Supplementary module (20 credits)
Choose one from the following list of modules:

• Analysis and visualisation
• Bones: from data to interpretation
• The analysis, interpretation and dissemination of field archaeology data
  • Coastal settlement
  • Conservation solutions
  • Themes in the Historic Landscape
  • Themes in the Prehistoric Landscape

• Assessed lecture
• Dissertation
