MA in Cultural Heritage Management
Course Placements
Students are expected to spend nine days in the Autumn and
Spring terms on placement with an appropriate heritage agency. Placement may be undertaken one day per week in each term or as a block placement. Timing and days as negotiated with your placement provider.
Aims and objectives:
- To provide experience of heritage management within a working environment in the heritage/historic environment sector.
- To consolidate knowledge and understanding of heritage mangement procedures and issues in one or more of the taught modules.
It is the responsibility of the placement provider to:
- provide specific learning opportunities
- provide support and supervision
- be responsible for the health and safety of students whilst on placement
It is the responsibility of students to:
- take due regard of the needs of the placement provider and its customers, clients and employees
- record their activities so that they can provide a verbal report on their placement (see below)
- alert the placement provider and the Director of Studies to problems that might prevent the satisfactory completion of the placement.
Students will discuss placements with the Director of Studies at the
beginning of the Autumn and Spring terms. Particular placements cannot be
guaranteed but we will try to satisfy needs as far as possible.
The recommended placements available during 2006-7 include:
- Institute for the Public Understanding of the Past, University of York: research intern (Professor Helen Weinstein) 1-2 students x Autumn and Spring terms.
- The Council for British Archaeology, (Don Hensen) - 1-2 students x Autumn and Spring terms
- York City Council Archaeology section, St Leonard's Place (John Oxley) - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- English Heritage, Tanner Row: assist Ancient Monuments Inspectors (Dr Keith Emerick) - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- Yorkshire Museum assist with current projects, exhibitions, etc (Andrew Morrison) - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- Portable Antiquities Scheme, Yorkshire Museum - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- York Archaeological Trust - Dig, assist with school education - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- The Merchant Adventurers' Hall, assist with projects and public outreach (Jill Malusky-Bacon) - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- PLB Design Ltd - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
- North Yorkshire County Council - 1 student x Autumn and Spring terms
Students may be able to organize placements with other providers, however, this must be done well in advance of term time and in consultation with the director of studies for the MA.
