Museums
Recently redesigned and refurbished, this world-famous on-site displays and interprets a Viking street in York. there are associated displays of artefacts from this waterlogged site.
The NRM where the Main Reception will be held, but this museum with free admission is worth a look even by those not excited by trains - there is an excellent display of the reserve collections including all types of material culture from train memorabilia to railway hotel chamber pots. You can also see the conservation workshops in action and the famous royal carriages with their furnishings and fittings.
An immense collection of artefacts from the historic period,
ranging from a large display of English Civil War arms and armour through large collections of
domestic items from the 17th to 20th centuries, to the cobbled street displays with shop fronts. Set within what was once a prison, it is still possible to view some of the cellls and note the graffitti of the prisoners.
The museum has an impressive displays of Roman, Saxon, Viking and medieval material culture, and a small amount of later artefacts from York and its region. It is set within the Museum Gardens which contain the ruins of St Mary's Abbey.
For those interested in military artefacts, this museum with material linked to the Royal Dragoon Guards and the Prince of Wales' Own Regiment of Yorkshire will be of interest.
Located next to the King's Manor, has an interesting variety of material, including an important collection of studio pottery.
