The conference hotel is the York Moat House Hotel. This is the largest hotel in the city, though small by North American standards. It has conference facilities which will provide many of the rooms used for presentations.
It is close to the railway station, is within the city walls, and overlooks the River Ouse.
The room rates at the Moat House Hotel are 65 Pounds Sterling per night single occupancy, 75 Pounds Sterling per night double occupancy. This includes full English or Continental breakast in the restaurant, and is a very favourable rate. You should note that there are no additional (local or national) taxes - this is the rate you will be billed!
You can email the hotel direct using:
reservations.york@moathousehotels.com
and make sure to state that you are attending the SHA conference. If you find the hotel on the web, you will not be able to book by that means as the hotel has been block booked for SHA and you will be informed that there is no room, to prevent non-conference people from booking room space.
Bookings can also be made by telephoning reservations on (+44) 1904 459 988, and delegates should state that they are attending the SHA conference.
Some of the conference activities will be taking place at The King's Manor, part of the University of York and home to the Department of Archaeology, which is a gentle 10-minute walk from the Moat House Hotel. This historic building will be the venue for some of the symposia and general sessions, the book room, and poster displays. Catering facilities are available at this site as well as at the hotel.
Budget accommodation
In order that conference costs can be kept as low as possible for students who wish to attend, the conference has made arrangements for bookings at the York Backpackers International Hostel, which is in Micklegate House, Micklegate, only five minutes walk from the York Moat House Hotel one of the finest Georgian town houses in York, built in 1752.
