Arts and Humanities Research Council funded Collaborative PhD StudentshipAn archaeology of consumption and identity in the English Country House
Project Details:
DescriptionApplications are now closed for an AHRC funded Collaborative PhD studentship between Harewood House and the Department of Archaeology, University of York. However, students wishing to apply for their own research grants from AHRC or other sources, or who may be self-funded, are welcome to apply to join the reserach grouping to which this award is attached.Harewood House provides large, well-documented collections of material culture, together with the necessary textual evidence to understand its acquisition and use. Where necessary, other collections and resources within the Yorkshire Country House Partnership and further afield may be used to ensure that the Harewood evidence can be effectively placed in context. Data sets and/or themes already identified by the supervisors include: Each of these offers opportunities to analyse the role of material culture consumption in creating and recreating identity of all those (not just the owners) who lived at the house or on the estate. Issues of gender, class and possibly race (given the Harewood association with Jamaican sugar plantations, the source of the Lascelles wealth) may be explored within the chosen theme. For informal enquiries about the project, please contact Dr Harold Mytum, email: hcm1Ayork.ac.uk. Jon Finch is also an active academic member of staff in this group. Research Group Members |
