The Alcuin Collaboration is named after Alcuin College at the University of York, which is where most of the departments and research units in the Collaboration are located.
The famous Anglo-Saxon scholar and statesman, Alcuin of York (735 - 804), was born near York and was educated at the Cathedral School in York, one of the most distinguished centres of learning of its day in Europe. He became head of the school and rapidly became a noted scholar and travelled to the Continent to acquire books for the Cathedral library. He came to the attention of Charlemagne, whom he joined around 781 as master of the Palace School at Aachen, and helped with his political, educational and cultural reforms. Alcuin was the influential companion of papal legates and European political leaders until his death, returning to England only twice after moving to Aachen. He was at the centre of the European elite of scholars and poets, and became abbot of Tours. His famous poem in praise of the Church at York celebrates the history of Northumbria and York, its spiritual centre. He wrote other poems and lives of saints, was a mathematician, and also wrote much history, philosophy and theology.
