We hope the information on this page will help when your son or daughter is applying for student funding in their second and subsequent years at university. The regulations for student support are complex, we have put together the most important points to help when your son or daughter are making their application. There is additional information about the amount of grants and loans available to students from the Student Financial Support Unit.
Students on all undergraduate degree, nursing degree and HYMS programmes must re-apply for funding each year. Some nursing diploma students will also need to re-apply for funding each year.

This re-application method is for the following elements of student support:
Tuition Fee Loan
Maintenance Loan
Maintenance Grant/Special Support Grant
Parent’s Learning Allowance
Adult Dependants Grant
Disabled Students Allowance
Undergraduate Bursary
Parents/sponsors and students will normally be sent a letter to remind them to re-apply for support but you do not have to wait until you receive a letter to re-apply. The online application portal and paper forms are usually made available from 1 st March each year.
The deadline for re-applications is usually the end of April for non income-assessed applications and the end of May for income-assessed applications. It is important that your son or daughter applies before these deadlines if the application is late they may not receive their student funding for the start of term in October.
Household Income:
When calculating student support it is the ‘residual household income’ that is assessed. This is the gross household income less any allowable deductions such as pension contributions and £1,100 for each other child dependant (under 16, 16-20 in Further Education) and/or other dependant student in Higher Education.
Income that is assessed:
If a prospective student is under the age of 25 their income will normally be based on parental income. If they are married or live with a partner their income will also be taken into account as part of the ‘household income’. The student’s own earnings while studying are not included in the income assessment.
Providing your income details and documentation :
You may be asked to provide some proof of your income for the tax year 2008/9 as part of the re-application process. The amount of information you are asked to provide with repeat applications is generally less than for the first time application providing your household income remains about the same. If your income has changed significantly since the first application you will be asked to provide information relating to all your income.
As with the initial application you can ask for separate forms or a separate login so that your son or daughter does not have to see the form completed with your income details.
Independent status:
In certain circumstances students under the age of 25 may be considered to be independent of their parents, in this case they are assessed for support based on their own income.
Some examples are:
Your son or daughter would have to provide evidence of any of the above in order to be assessed as an independent student. If you think this would apply to your son or daughter you may like to prompt them to contact the Student Support Office.
If your son or daughter is an undergraduate social work student s/he will need to apply as above and s/he will also have to re-apply each year for the Social Work Bursary from the NHS Business Services Authority. Application packs can be downloaded from www.ppa.org.uk/swb
If your son or daughter is studying on a Health Sciences (Midwifery or Nursing) degree programme their funding comes from two sources, the Local Authority and the NHS. Students will need to re-apply for both types of funding for each year of their course.
For Local Authority funding (Maintenance Loans) students who began their course can re-apply online at www.direct.gov.uk/studentfinance or on a paper form PR1. Forms can be downloaded from the above link or obtained from the University’s Student Support Office.
Parents/sponsors and students will normally be sent a letter to remind them to re-apply for support, but you do not have to wait until you receive a letter to re-apply. The online application portal and paper forms are usually made available from 1 st March each year.
The deadline for re-applications is usually the end of April for non income-assessed applications and the end of May for income-assessed applications.
