The Nobel prize winner and leading researcher in atomic physics, Dr William Phillips who works at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the USA, is to give a public lecture at the University of York later this month (Wednesday 22 January) on atom optics.
William Phillips was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1997 
for his work on the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. The Prize was shared with Steven Chu of Stanford University and Claude Cohen-Tannoudji, Collège de France and École Normale Supérieure, Paris.
The work paved the way to the experimental realisation of Bose-Einstein condensation in atomic gases, which also merited the 2001 award of the Nobel Prize to three other researchers in the field.
The lecture ‘Optics with laser-like atom waves' is to be held at the University of York at 2.15pm in the University Physics building, Room PL002. Entrance is free and all are welcome.
