Terms of Reference

Primary Purpose: To determine strategy and policy in the academic and academic support areas

Issues where the Committee’s role is to decide (typically the Committee’s role may be expected to involve some consideration of defined possibilities/priorities)

  • To determine priorities for development, such as new departments, new interdisciplinary centres and other strategic initiatives
  • To determine strategic targets in respect of all areas of the University, within the resource allocation framework and budgets set by Policy and Resources Committee
  • To set standard University tuition fees and to advise on student admissions targets
  • To determine arrangements for the approval of the introduction of new programmes of study, the quality assurance of all programmes being a matter for Teaching Committee

Issues where the Committee’s role is formally to approve/rubber stamp (ie the work to develop a firm proposal is done elsewhere and the Committee gives the authority to proceed)  

  • To approve arrangements for the appointment and replacement of staff in academic and support areas of the University within the context of budgets approved by Policy and Resources Committee

 Issues where the Committee’s role is to inform or shape policy or strategy

    • includes work undertaken in response to the request of a higher committee
    • approval of this course of action actually given by executive action or a higher committee
  • To consider and make recommendations on any matter of strategy or policy referred to it by Senate or Boards of Studies
  • To keep under review the University's range of disciplines/departments and its student recruitment strategies, in the context of the University Plan
  • To approve the creation of new interdepartmental centres
  • To determine priorities for the implementation of new, cross-University arrangements for the management of departments

Issues where the Committee’s role is to monitor (eg implementation of strategy/policy, effectiveness of processes)

  • To oversee the University's planning and associated budgeting arrangements
  • To monitor and review strategy and policy in the academic and academic support areas of the University in the context of the University Plan
  • To inform Senate and Policy and Resources Commitee annually on the implementation of the University Plan in respect of academic and academic support areas

 Generic role relevant to ALL Committees

  • In the regular course of its business to consider issues of equal opportunity
