Research Leaders

Research Leaders are expected to lead and manage a research team, secure new research grants, liaise with stakeholders, publish, respond to institutional issues and agendas, and maintain and develop their own research expertise. Frequently they simultaneously carry out a range of teaching and administrative duties too.

Increasingly, Research Councils are requesting evidence in the application process of how leaders and next generation leaders are being developed. With the changes to research funding, it is vital that we provide suitable opportunity to address and evidence this area.

Whilst our existing Leadership in Action programme offers an opportunity to develop leadership capability and increase personal awareness, our new pilot programme focuses on some of the key leadership challenges in the context of a research environment.

Research Leaders Programme

This programme is aimed at senior researchers/Principal Investigators who are heading up research projects and managing researchers. The aim of the programme is to bring together a group of Research Leaders from a range of disciplines.

As it is a pilot programme we are asking HoDs to nominate individuals who they feel will benefit from consolidating their leadership experience to date and building on existing skills. Those individuals will need to complete the Research Leaders nomination form and send it to pod-enquiries@york.ac.uk by Wednesday 19th October.

The course will be facilitated by Brian Fulton, Karen Clegg and Susan Kane with a variety of established research leaders sharing their experience and participating in dialogue with the group.

There are three compulsory modules:

  1. Collective Leadership and the Changing Context of Higher Education (17 & 18 Nov 2011)
  2. Supporting and Developing a Team (6 Feb 2012)
  3. Performance and Career Development (14 March 2012)

These are complemented by online resources and three face-to-face optional workshops:

  • Managing the Changing Landscape of Research Projects (28 November 2011) facilitated by Heather Watson and Anna Grey
  • Engagement, Impact and Influence (2 March 2012) facilitated by Jennifer Chubb
  • A Q&A panel made up of a variety of individuals who support the research agenda (date tbc)
