Leadership in Action

Rationale

This course is suitable for those who have line management responsibility as part of their role

Course outline

Following discussions with Academic Coordinators, Heads of Department, Departmental Training Officers, and through performance review feedback three themes were identified to be included in the programme:

  • Managing and Developing Self
  • Managing and Developing Others
  • Managing within the University

These themes are explored in a series of eight modules:

Each module lasts one day, except for Module 1 which is two days. Delegates are further supported through a series of coaching sessions which take place between modules.

Objectives

The objectives of this programme are:

  • To provide the essential knowledge and understanding required to perform leadership and management roles effectively
  • To develop relevant skills, attitudes and behaviours of those who hold leadership and management roles within the University
  • To create a supportive and effective framework to share best practice and explore solutions to challenges within leadership and management roles
  • To support University Strategy by developing and empowering leaders and managers to achieve high performance
  • To maximise the potential of our managers and leaders
  • To provide departments with management and leadership skills which will assist them in meeting department aims and objectives
  • To contribute to a culture of continuous professional development

Prerequisites

Before commencing the programme, a meeting should take place between you and your line manager in order to start identifying particular areas you wish to develop, consolidate or explore. These should be recorded on an individual learning plan, a template for which will be distributed to you before you start the programme. This must be returned to POD before the start of the first module.

It is compulsory for all Leadership in Action delegates to attend all 8 modules of the programme.
