Other types of leave
There are a number of other types of leave for particular circumstances. Choose a link below for more information:
Annual leave
Entitlement
- The full-time entitlement to annual leave is 30 days plus 8 public holidays a year, or 281.2 hours (38 days x 7.4 hours a day).
- If you work part-time your entitlement is reduced pro-rata based on the number of hours a week and/or the number of weeks a year you work.
Leave year
- For most staff the leave year runs from October to September. Your manager will tell you if your department operates differently.
- If you join or leave part-way through the leave year, your entitlement is based on the proportion of the leave year you will work.
Taking annual leave
- Agree the dates of your leave in advance with your line manager. Try and give as much notice as possible, especially when taking large blocks of leave.
- Your department will have a system for recording leave which you should use.
- The University closes for three or four days over the Christmas/New Year period. You need to use annual leave for these closure days if you would otherwise be at work.
Untaken annual leave
- With the agreement of your line manager you can carry up to five days' leave into a new leave year.
- Exceptionally, and only with the agreement of your Head of Department, you may be allowed to carry forward up to ten days' leave.
