Additional public holidays in 2011 and 2012
The government has announced additional public holidays in 2011 and 2012:
- Royal Wedding Day, 29 April 2011
- Queen’s Jubilee Day, 5 June 2012
Both these additional public holidays occur in active teaching and examination periods.
The University has determined that the additional public holidays will be dealt with in the same way as other in-term public holidays (such as the May Day holiday) where there is a requirement to maintain and support the teaching, assessment and research programme
This means that the University will adopt the following arrangements:
- Academic, teaching, research and support staff who are needed to maintain the University’s core activities on the day will be required to work as normal
- Staff required to work on each of the public holidays will be granted one additional day of leave per holiday (pro-rata with the employee’s full-time equivalent [FTE]) in lieu, to be taken in agreement with the employee’s line manager
- Support staff in grades 1-5 who work on these public holidays will be eligible for pay at two times plain times rates for hours worked on the public holiday, in line with arrangements specified in the public holiday and working web page.
- Staff who would normally be working on these days and who are not required to work on the public holiday, will take that day as a public holiday day
- Staff who normally work a part-day on the public holiday will be given an additional leave allowance pro-rata with their FTE as their public holiday allowance
- Staff who do not normally work on the day of the public holiday will be given an additional leave allowance pro-rata with their FTE, to be taken at another time in agreement with the employee’s line manager.
- The additional public holiday arrangements will be granted to staff in employment on the public holidays. An employee’s public holiday entitlement for the leave year will not be increased if they start employment after the public holidays
- The public holiday arrangements do not apply to casually engaged individual (paid on a fees basis) or to Temp Pool individuals
The working arrangements will be determined by local managers in departments. You should contact your line manager for advice on local arrangements.
