The Careers Service is made up of the following three teams:

Advice & guidance

Careers Advisers

All our Careers Advisers are qualified to undergraduate degree level, with professional qualifications in careers guidance, including the QCG, DipCEG and NVQ4.

The role of the Careers Adviser is very varied and involves liaising with students, alumni, academic staff and employers. Regular tasks and responsibilities involve:

  • providing careers advice and guidance, face to face and by email within the Careers Service and within individual academic departments
  • delivering group sessions on a range of topics, including employability, career planning and preparing for interviews
  • planning and running careers events and fairs
  • keeping up to date with labour market information
  • negotiating which careers sessions to run in departments
  • providing departments with regular newsletters and opportunity updates
  • visiting employers to find out about recruitment processes and vacancies.

      The Business, Community and Enterprise team are here to help you gain the experience you need to stand out in the graduate labour market. Using your time at University to try out types of work, challenge yourself by participating in business competitions or contributing to the local community through structured volunteering will both help you identify your personal strengths, but will also impress potential future employers.

    Operations

    The Operations Team tasks and responsibilities involve:

    • handling a wide range of daily telephone and email enquiries from students, alumni, staff, employers and professional organisations
    • coordinating and supporting an extensive programme of fairs, events and skills sessions each term for all students
    • liaison with alumni, employers and professional organisations to engage them in a wide range of on-campus student activities
    • coordination of the online job vacancies, events and opportunities database, the Interactive Careers Service
    • marketing the activities of the Careers Service to students, alumni, staff, employers and professional organisations
    • providing a range of support processes that underpin activities delivered by the Careers Service.

    Information

    The Information Team’s tasks and responsibilities involve: 

    • handling enquiries at the Information Desk, including providing information and advice on resources and referring users to other appropriate information sources

    • researching and disseminating careers information to colleagues and the service’s main user groups

    • the maintenance and development of all information resources, including the Careers Service website and the Information Room’s files, journals, reference books and takeaway materials

    • planning and running careers events and fairs in conjunction with other Careers Service staff

    • representing the Careers Service at events and fairs, including the University open days, postgraduates fair and YUSU fair, and handling enquiries at such events

    • marketing the Careers Service to students, alumni staff and employers.
