Information for students

In February every year, we publish a list of private sector properties available to let to students

We recommend that you start your accommodation search by looking at this list

All properties advertised on this Private Sector List are required to comply with the Code of Best Practice (PDF , 1,029kb) which covers standards for safety, security, amenities and management practices.

It also includes a section outlining your responsibilities as a student tenant

Before we will advertise a property, the landlord must submit:

  • an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC)
  • gas and electric safety certificates
  • a house in multiple occupation (HMO) licence (where appropriate)
  • a signed statement from the landlord that the property complies with the Code of Best Practice

The Code has been developed in partnership with several other stakeholders, including other York educational institutions, City of York Council, the local Landlords Association, individual landlords and student representatives.

*** The list is only available on the web to registered students and staff of the University of York. If you are a prospective student for the coming academic year and do not yet have a university username and password, please contact Accommodation Services to request access***

Non-compliance

If you are resident in a property that has been advertised on our list and you do not believe the property standards or landlord management practices comply with the code, please email accommodation@york.ac.uk to let us know.

Further information on the non-compliance procedure can be found in the Code of Best Practice (PDF , 1,029kb)
