Summary of our accommodation

The University of York is a collegiate university and provides on-campus College accommodation for approximately 3500 full-time Undergraduate students.

Key points to consider before you apply:

  • Each College has its own website.  Spend time reviewing the facilities/services/social aspects of each of the Colleges
  • Have a few preferences in mind for College/room type and contract length as your preferences may not always be available when applying
  • See the Student Union (YUSU) website for advice on what to consider when choosing a college/room type/let length

The Colleges vary in age and the rooms vary in size and facilities within the same College.

All College campus accommodation is within walking distance of the teaching buildings.  There is a free shuttle bus service between the Heslington East and West sites.

Room Types

Room Types

The following descriptions are used to refer to the different room types that are available:

  • Standard: study bedroom with a wash basin.  Shower rooms and toilets are shared with other residents
  • Ensuite: study bedroom with its own shower room, toilet and wash basin
  • Studio Flat: large study bedroom with its own bathroom and kitchen facilities
  • Economy: room in an accommodation block with basic facilities
  • Upgraded: room in an accommodation block that has recently been refurbished
  • Premium: room located in a newer accommodation block

Catered rooms are offered in Derwent, James and Vanbrugh Colleges.  All rooms have access to self-catering facilities.

There is a limited number of studio flats and they are usually let to couples rather than single students.

We also have a small number of twin rooms (where the bedroom is shared with another student, usually of the same gender).

Single-gender flats are offered in some Colleges.  In these flats, restrictions apply to overnight guests of a different gender between the hours of midnight and 10.00 the following morning.  At all other times residents are entitled to invite guests of a different gender into their accommodation.  If you wish to be allocated to a single-gender flat please state this in the 'Additional Notes' section of your accommodation application.

If you indicate that it is very important for you to be offered a single gender flat, you may be allocated a different college/room type/let length from the one that you selected.   There is no guarantee that you will be allocated a room in a single-gender flat.
