The University and The York Housing Association (YHA) provide a limited number of one, two and three bedroom furnished and unfurnished properties.
We give priority to couples and families who are new to York. However we cannot guarantee to provide accommodation to all new couples and families.
If allocated a University property you are normally given a fixed-term lease for 51 weeks beginning in October. Unless there are very exceptional circumstances, you will be expected to move to private accommodation for subsequent years.
Rents in the private sector are generally higher than University rents so you will need to budget for this if you will be remaining in York for more than one year.
Accommodation Services can assist you to find private accommodation and publishes a list of private sector vacancies in February each year.
If you do not get a place in couple/family accommodation in your first year, you can re-apply early in the Spring Term for the following year. However, priority will be given to those coming new to York.
Students allocated a York Housing Association property will be given the opportunity to renew their tenancy each year for the duration of their course.
Allocations for students with dependent children will be made during July.
Allocation for couples accommodation will be made no later than mid August when the online application period ends for Postgraduates.
Please see our allocation policy.
