Developing the MyUoY app

The vision

The MyUoY app has been developed to help students access and manage life on the go. Bringing a range of tools and tasks together in one place, it aims to offer solutions that are suited to a mobile experience, bringing satisfaction to users by freeing up their time and removing frustrations.

Right now, students can use the app to carry out a number of tasks including viewing their daily schedule, locating rooms via the map, accessing live study space information, booking a space to work, accessing the Library and taking out books.

Following student feedback and in line with the University's new brand, a new look for the app was launched in time for the 2023/24 academic year.

The app is contributing to the wider University vision of a seamless student experience, by improving how our students interact with us digitally and physically.

MyUoY is popular among students on campus and on average it has over 10,000 active users per month and an app store rating of 4.4 out of 5.

The team

The MyUoY product team is based in IT Services and includes a product owner, developers, QA and UX specialists and a business analyst. The team works collaboratively with colleagues across the University and external agencies to explore, develop, test and build an app that works best for its users.

Student engagement

Student insight and input is key to the development of the app - we want the app to be of value and useful to all students. As MyUoY grows we want to ensure the needs of our student community and the University's wider objectives are reflected in what and how we build.

We regularly seek student feedback on the app and its features to understand how people are using it and how satisfied they are. We have plans in place to further engage with our students - we want to hear their views, feedback and ideas for the app's features and future.

Coming soon

We are always looking to improve the MyUoY app and are currently working on a number of features to help improve the app experience for students.

What we’re working on now

  • Campus Map - improvements to the search function
  • Discover - working with users to help promote events and activities

What we’ll be working on next

  • Explore - features to help make the best of campus space

We are always looking for ways we can improve the existing app and try to do this in response to the feedback we receive.

For example, in a Pulse Survey in January 2023, students said they were interested in receiving notifications about campus disruptions. The introduction of notifications is an area we are currently exploring - we want to understand what types would be of value to students and look at how best to offer this. In the interim, we have been using 'Latest news' on the homepage to communicate up to date information about campus disruptions.
