Upcoming opportunities

The Centre's transdisciplinary approach to understanding, interpreting and responding to the challenges of the Anthropocene will help identify opportunities to increase the future sustainability of our planet.

Our postdoctoral researchers create a pool of complementary expertise and skills, collaborating within and across academic disciplines to deliver world-leading research. Our current postdoctoral researchers work across a range of projects covering the sciences, social sciences and humanities. Find out more about their research.

We welcome enquiries from current or potential Independent Research Fellows interested in holding their fellowship with us. Fellows based in LCAB will be fully integrated in the wider interactive and collaborative life of the Centre, and should play a role in developing these aspects of our research community.

We will consider hosting fellows working in any area of research which aligns with the goals of our Centre and can offer a range of support tailored to the individual fellowship concerned. This may include:

  • guidance in developing and refining your research proposal along with advice on appropriate funding scheme
  • additional salary to extend the fellowship duration beyond the initial funding period (fully funded fellowships)
  • salary to support a postdoctoral research associate linked to the fellowship (fully funded fellowships)
  • salary match funding, which may be split with home departments (part-funded fellowships)
  • co-supervision of a PhD student associated with the Centre.
  • mentoring a postdoctoral research associate in the Centre
  • eligibility to bid for further LCAB research funding to support, for example, pump-priming activities, academic visitors to the Centre, short-term buy-in of skills or internal placements.

Fellows will also belong to a home department and further support may be available from this department. Find out more about each departments offer, and further guidance on holding a fellowship at York.

Centre specific enquiries should be directed to lcab-enquiries@york.ac.uk.

We're currently recruiting two fully-funded PhD studentships (4-years, full time at UK fee rate) for a September/October 24 start. The supervisor defined projects are:

  • Biodiversity gains in churchyards as a microcosm for UK biodiversity gains
  • Urban gardens to improve health, biodiversity and climate-change resilience in cities in Bangladesh

Find out more and apply by Sunday 19 May 2024

The Centre will host 24 PhD students at the University over a period of 10 years to work on projects relevant to our research objectives, in most instances with co-supervisors from two or more disciplines.

All doctoral students will receive training and interaction opportunities with other researchers across our partner institutions. Students will split their time between the Centre hub and their primary supervisor's department to facilitate interdisciplinary and within-discipline training.

We also welcome exciting ideas for future research from self-funded PhD applicants.
